Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
The Lollar Novel 90 and Imperial humbucker combination givesyou a full medley of tonal textures to enjoy the guitar through.
On the Novel 90, we don’t think we can do any better than Premier Guitar’s writeup in their Humbucker-Size P-90 Review Roundup: “They’re bold pickups with a sophisticated sound. Fatter in the low-mids than most of their rivals, they emphasize warmth and complexity over snappy attack. They’re not exactly dark sounding, but they’ve got an old, vintage vibe—as if the magnets have softened over time. Lollar P-90s sound smooth and smoky in the best possible way (think well-aged whiskey).”
In the bridge position of this guitar, the Lollar Imperial delivers tones that are thick and chunky. The low midrange hits hard, while the upper frequencies breathe nicely and allow for the perfect presence on top. A coil-split on the humbucker gives access to spaghetti western and surf-inspired tones. Crank a little reverb on the amp and go to town with those twangy lower register single note lines.
Combining the coil split bridge with the Novel 90 in the neck provides a broad soundscape of full-bodied low end, gently-scooped midrange and shimmering highs. Pop the bridge back to full humbucking mode to bring the midrange in full force. Now you get the remarkably robust bottom of the Novel 90 alongside the rich midrange of the Imperial.
The Shoreline Gold finish on this guitar has a wonderful champagne hue and features light distressing, enough to where you don’t have to worry about putting the first ding on the guitar. The tortoise pickguard is the perfect counterpart, and the guitar showcases a rather exotic looking piece of rosewood on the fretboard.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without any buzz. The fretwork is impeccable and the frets are highly polished for perfectly smooth string bending.
