Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Ivey Think?
This 70's throwback is sure to turn heads with an Antigua Burst finish that Fano absolutely knocked out of the park. With its matching Antigua pickguard, black witch hat knobs and black-covered Fano P-90s, it captures all of the vibe of yesteryear while having tones you wouldn't have been able to achieve in a stock JM configuration. Wah pedal and shag carpet sold separately.
All jokes aside, this guitar sounds and plays great. The Fano P-90 in the bridge has a very balanced EQ spectrum with an upper midrange that tapers off right before getting bright. With some overdrive it has a nice bite to it, and has a chunky lower midrange that's punchy and sits in just the right spot on the EQ curve. This guitar’s unique resonance shines here too... there’s a subtle shimmer you get acoustically that translates beautifully through the bridge pickup played clean.
The neck position is smooth with some nice natural compression and a present pick attack that keeps things clear. It sounds great with an amp at edge of breakup, pushing it into a very musical sweet spot. When playing lead with some higher gain overdrive or fuzz, it has a warm and vocal disposition that sounds really cool for some Jack White inspired riffs. If you're looking for a more pristine clean sound, mix in the bridge pickup for a more hollowed-out tone that also pairs nicely with dense verbs and delays.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even a touch lower on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The early ‘60s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue.
