Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Ivey Think?
Shoreline Gold with rosewood fretboard and Tortoiseshell pickguard is one of our favorite aesthetics for the JM6. This one is particularly stunning both visually and sonically, boasting a set of Lollar Mini Humbuckers that we have found to be a killer match for the alder body, 25.5” scale and TOM bridge combination of this guitar.
The bridge pickup has great definition and clarity, allowing for tones that sit somewhere between a Tele and a PAF, emphasizing more of a single-coil feel while retaining the body of a humbucker. The attack is tight and notes come through with great articulation. As opposed to mini hums of the past, this pickup is much more resistant to feedback.
If you want to get a tone closer to a classic humbucker, slightly rolling back the tone knob will fatten up the middle register without muddying the top end. When playing through a Marshall-inspired amp, you can achieve some Jimmy Page tones with ease.
The neck is sweet and very Strat-like, with a touch more compression. It's an incredibly clear neck position, with a lower register that stays tight when you dig in. By switching to the middle position you can achieve a pristine, bell-like clean tone that is the perfect platform for ambient verbs and delays.
How Does It Play?
The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and below on the high E, without any buzz.
