Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What do we think?

The Fano P90 pickups are full-bodied and powerful, yet have a softer side that is just as readily accessible. For example, the neck pickup exudes warmth, punch, and snappiness all at once. The latter can be contributed to the maple fretboard which brings a wonderful clarity to this position that many guitars simply lack. The bridge sounds like a cross between a Strat and Tele in the bridge position. Bold but not overly strident. Crisp but not overly “stringy”. The middle position has a superb sweetness with strong low end, restrained mids and sparkling highs.

How Does It Play?

Fast and smooth. The sanded-down finish on the back of the neck is a nice touch, treated with Tung oil to give it the perfect broken in feel. The profile is a moderately thin 60’s C, comfortable but with just enough shoulder to hold onto. The string action measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E, and even lower on the high E. That is completely free of fretbuzz. It is also worth mentioning that the contoured neck heel makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless.
