Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This JM6 in stunning Lake Placid Blue is very nicely worn thanks to its distressing job from Fano. It feels great with the back of the neck sanded down and has the mojo you'd expect from a well-played vintage guitar. It has a nicely balanced acoustic resonance you can feel in your chest that really complements the specs of this build.
The voicing of Fano humbuckers is robust. They lean a hair darker than some other PAF-styled offerings, which makes them a perfect complement to the maple fretboard. The bridge position comes through rich and meaty, with a controlled top end. It sounds gorgeous through a clean amp, but we know you’re going to want to turn on the overdrive sooner or later. This pickup thrives through a drive channel.
The neck position features a lightly compressed attack with a big, bold bloom. It’s a little smokey but maintains enough enunciation to let you rip through some bluesy double stops or strum vast open chords with clarity. The middle position is tight and bell-like. More spank than quack. Plenty of snap and chimey highs.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s-inspired C profile is round and supportive, yet more slim than chunky. The string action on this beauty measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and well under 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz anywhere on the neck.
