Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
Shell Pink has become one of our favorite colors when spec'ing new guitars, and it really looks great on this JM6. We couldn't resist grabbing one of Lollar’s new "The Bird" pickups to throw in the neck position, featuring a sleek no-hole nickel cover. All around this build just looks great!
We've really enjoyed the JM6's we've had with the Lollar Firebird in the neck, and its no different with their new "The Bird" humbucker-sized pickup. The clarity and single coil-esque nature of the Firebird pickup is all there. But it’s fully hum-cancelling by nature. This pickup is very three-dimensional and bell-like, and has a really cool sizzle with some overdrive.
The Imperial in the bridge is a nice contrast to the neck position, adding in a nice midrange that sits well with a multitude of amps and overdrives. It's a very versatile pickup that can handle anything from country to hard rock with ease. Bookending the delicious midrange, it has a transparent upper register and a tight bottom end. It is truly a favorite of ours for the bridge position on a JM6.
How Does It Play?
The whole guitar feels nicely broken in, from the distressed body contours to the back of the neck with finish tastefully removed. The neck is a moderate C, comparable to the modern C on many a Fender guitar but with a healthier shoulder that supports the hand beautifully. The string action on this one measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. Nice and low without a hint of fretbuzz.
