Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
This pickup combination is really cool. If you tend to find the swing from dark to bright to be a bit much on your standard neck to bridge relationship, then read on. The Lollar ‘50s wind P-90 in the neck is more Strat than Paul. It is crisp and open, yet maintains that wonderful girth a P-90 at the same time. The attack is clean and spanky, yet thicker than your typical single coil neck position.
The middle position blends the ‘50s wind and Standard wind P-90s with wonderful results. Think almost glassy, but with breadth and punch behind the brilliance. The bridge position rolls back the bass a bit and puts more emphasis on a rich midrange. The top end is articulate but not strident. This is probably where you’ll live when putting the amp through its gain-ier paces. The pickup has a good moderate output that can push the amp when desired, and leaves you room to clean it up right from the volume knob.
Also worth mentioning, both pickups respond very nicely to the tone knob. And when it comes to cosmetics, this guitar has an incredibly dark and consistent cut of rosewood on the fretboard. We also really dig the Ocean Turquoise finish. Perhaps one of the most elegant finish options in our opinion.
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The string action measures just 4/64” across all strings at the 12th fret, without any buzz. The contoured neck heel makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless, and the worn neck finish delivers an immediately broken-in feel that is tongue-oiled to be smooth and fast without any stick as your hands get moving.
