Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
Hard to put into words, but we’re going to try. First of all, the emotional connection to this guitar is immediate. It feels familiar yet exhilarating at the same time. The tonality is very balanced up the entire neck, so once you dial in your tone with a couple of strong cowboy chords you are good to go. The guitar has a perfect presence balanced with remarkable punch and depth in the lower register.
It all starts with a good piece of wood, and this guitar definitely has that going for it with a resonant alder body. But it’s the pickups too. The neck pickup is an OmniTron P-90, made by Lollar specially for Fano. This pickup is constructed with magnetic pole pieces instead of traditional bar magnets, taking queues from a single coil pickup. For a similar pickup, Lollar’s Alnico Pole P-90 would be the closest thing. But the OmniTron is voiced with a sweeter and fuller midrange. Think a fat Strat neck pickup with some real guts when you dig in.
The Lollar Firebird in the bridge position exhibits some single-coil tendencies as well, but is technically a humbucker in construction. You get subtle doses of the compression and rounded attack of a humbucker along with a more open EQ curve. This pickup really barks and it is a true pleasure to throw that pickup selector from neck to bridge when you want to put those gritty rhythm parts and snarling lead tones into overdrive. You can roll the tone back a touch to tailor the top end and bring the midrange to the forefront for more traditional humbucking tones.
The push/pull on the tone knobs puts the bridge pickup in single-coil mode, and to wonderful effect. It gives you the spank of a Strat bridge position, but with perhaps a little more transparency and less brashness in the midrange. It will really make your open chords jangle and your funk rhythms sparkle. Switch the pickup selector to the middle position and enjoy the quack of a strat in the “in-between” positions but with less of the out-of-phase sound. Looking to shoot straight down the middle and push through the mix? Put the Firebird back in humbucker mode and you’ll find the middle position really packs a punch.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The string action measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string and even under on the high E, without any buzz. The contoured neck heel makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless, and the worn neck finish delivers an immediately broken-in feel that is Tung-oiled to be smooth and fast without any stick as your hands get moving.
