Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
First of all, this is a very lightweight instrument. Despite its large offset alder body, this guitar weighs just 7lb 4.6oz. And quite frankly, the Tortoise-on-Fiesta color combination is just superb.
This JM6 also features one of our favorite P-90 pickup combinations. The Lollar Low Wind P-90 in the neck is fat but articulate, cleaning up the lower midrange that can be a bit overwhelming with a standard P-90 in the neck. And it pairs perfectly with the traditional P-90 wind in the bridge.
The bridge position delivers excellent bite with becoming nasal in quality. It is a dynamic pickup that delivers a pristine, clear tone in front of a clean amp and has the punch to push an overdriven amp into compression, upping the ante with a complex midrange and big sustain. The middle position delivers glorious, chimey cleans. Stay I this position a minute to revel in the natural acoustic qualities of the instrument.
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up with the string action measuring just 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E, without buzz. As with all Fanos, the frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The lacquer is sanded off the back of the neck for a smooth tung-oiled finish without any stickiness when things get cooking.
