Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
The Lollar Novel T in this guitar nails the balance between a P-90 and a Tele bridge pickup. On top of that, the strings dispense a bit more resonance and harmonic content without there being any magnetic pull from a neck pickup to stifle them. It’s a subtle difference, but it gives you that little extra strength and shimmer that the bridge position on a 2-pickup guitar has a hard time delivering.
The clean tones on this guitar are remarkably full and balanced. Even with the tone all the way up, there is a sweetness on top. The midrange has a nice cluck that is immediate and responsive. The bottom is big and gutsy.
Edge-of-breakup tones are harmonically-rich and effortlessly balanced. Whether playing full chords or riffing on just a couple strings, the tones are meaty but vibrant. And when you really start dishing on the dirt, the “rawness” of a P-90 comes to the fore. The pickup takes on the bite… though with less of the snarl… of a good P-90.
How Does It Play?
This guitar plays fast and low without fretbuzz, with the string hovering around 4/64” across all frets. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The worn neck finish delivers an immediately broken-in feel and is tongue-oiled smooth and fast.
