Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
The Lollar Firebird pickups are some of our favorite tricks in the toolbox. They can be nuanced and transparent, yet can roar with the best of them. The Firebird design delivers a tone that is somewhere between a humbucker and single coil. You get the open midrange of the latter, along with a bit of the compression and rounded attack of the former.
The neck position stays articulate without having to roll down the midrange on your amp. The bottom is big and bold. The top end is clear and singing with a nuanced touch of roundness and compression in the attack. Work the tone knob to dial in a variety of colors without losing clarity along the way.
The Firebird in the bridge position could be likened to a Telecaster on steroids. It’s bigger and punchier, less brash but just as impactful. It delivers plenty of chirp in the most musical manner. Just like the neck, this position responds very nicely to the tone knob. You can even dial in some PAF-inspired tones with a creamier midrange and rolled off treble around the halfway point on the knob.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s C neck profile is a beautiful medium C with generous shoulder to support the hand. The fretwork is impeccable. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret, and even lower on the high E. All without buzz. The back of the neck feels exceptionally smooth and natural where the finish is sanded away under the fretting hand.
