Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This is a wonderfully lightweight alder body JM6, weighing in at just 7lb 5oz. Nonetheless, it’s BIG on tone with a pair of Lollar El Rayos.
The neck position is deep and warm, but has a crisper midrange than your standard fare humbucker. This gives it a nice cluck, but it doesn’t lose the smokiness we love in a neck humbucker. It sounds enormous through a clean rig, and you’ll find it also handles gain well. You’ll probably be encouraged to do some of your lead playing without ever leaving the neck position.
The middle position sounds equally big, but with a little more immediacy to the pick attack. It does not have the phasey tone that some middle positions give way to, but rather sounds rich and wide open across all frequencies. There is nice sparkle on top, but not at the expense of a punchy bottom and bold midrange.
The bridge pickup has Tele meets Les Paul vibes. The low end is punchy but round, kind of like a brass-saddled Tele. With the tone knob all the way up, the midrange in snappy and the top end controlled but delightfully articulate. As you back the tone knob down, you will cut the twang and hear more PAF-inspired qualities.
Indeed, the El Rayos work very nicely in tandem with the tone knob, granting usable tones as you turn the knob nearly all the way down to zero. The sweep is wide and the sweet spot is very large, allowing you to dial in some classic ZZ Top rhythm tones or even the filtered wah-like sounds of Brad Paisley’s “Ticks.”
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s C neck profile leans on the slim side for comfort, with enough shoulder and girth to comfortably support the hand. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th and even lower on the high E, all without buzz. The neck feels completely smooth and natural where the finish is sanded away on the back of the neck. The guitar is beautifully sculpted on the back to hug the body and has a generous arm contour to keep your picking hand relaxed.
