Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
Getting plugged in, the Alnico Pole P-90 in the neck sounds like a rich and harmonically-complex take on a single coil. It blends the warmth of a standard P-90 with the precise punch of the best single coils. It has a little more compression than a standard single, yet clean tones stay perfectly detailed. Overdrives are complex and gritty.
The middle position is more forward, very “tight” and responsive. It brings out every nuance of your picking hand. With a bit of palm muting, it evokes a more organic version of “Every Breath You Take.”
The bridge wind of the Alnico Pole P-90 has a nice bite with wonderful coloration in the lower midrange. This pickup is especially reactive to the guitar’s volume and tone controls. Roll back the volume in front of a driven amp to uncover additional string definition and sparkle as the front end of the amp relaxes, or roll back the tone to hi-pass some top end and smooth out the midrange for more humbucker-like tones, all with an irrevocable tightness that a humbucker will be hard-pressed to deliver.
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up with the string action measuring just a hair over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E, and under 4/64” on the high E without buzz. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The lacquer is sanded off the back of the neck for a smooth tung-oiled finish without any stickiness when things get cooking.
