Like what you see? Photos are of the exact instrument you will receive.
Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
We are in love with both of these Lollar pickups individually, so putting them together in one guitar was only logical. They pair wonderfully in both output and tonal color. The Lollar Firebird in the bridge has more jangle and transparency than you would find in a humbucker, while delivering the power and subtle rounded edge that a single coil can’t give you. It handles cleans and dirt with equal grace, maintaining clarity as you turn up the through light and moderate gain. The Alnico Pole P-90 in the neck sounds like an extremely rich and harmonically-complex take on a single coil. It blends the warmth of a standard P-90 with the precise attack of the best single coils. Overdrives in this position are thick and gritty.
The middle position has a sweet bell-like tone with beautiful natural compression and a lovely blending of the individual characters of the two pickups. In all positions, the guitar does a fantastic job of being clear without being bright. In fact, the warmth of the low end is present throughout, but never overpowering. And if you want that middle position to have more snap, there is a coil-split on the Firebird pickup that will take you into gorgeous single coil territory! The Firebird coil-split on its own will also do a real nice country Tele impersonation with a little compression and slapback.
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking. The action on this guitar is absolutely beautiful, without any buzz. The string height measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E. The neck also has some flame to it when caught under the light!
