Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This Tobacco Burst JM6 is a really cool combination of classic aesthetics and unique appointments. This alder body offset comes with a Lollar Mini Humbucker in the bridge and Firebird in the neck, quickly becoming one of our favorite pickup combinations.
The Mini humbucker in the bridge of this guitar has a strong and nuanced midrange that nails some classic rock tones. The high end is clear but not too bright, having some aspects that sound like a beefy tele bridge pickup. There's a punchy low end despite it being a mini. It tapers off where a humbucker could tend to be muddy making for a well EQ'd bridge position that works well with high gain.
The middle position sound is really cool with this pickup combination. It has flavors of a strat in the 2nd position but with a little bit of added compression. Moving to just the neck, the Lollar Firebird is hard to beat when it comes to a clear and articulate neck tone. We've really been enjoying these in the JM6's and this one is no different. When played clean, chords and fingerpicking sound piano-like. When throwing in some gain, you've got a great tone for sizzling blues licks with a hair of swampy mojo in the lower mids.
How Does It Play?
The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret… hair above on the low E and below on the high E. There is no fret buzz. The frets are dressed and polished beautifully. The contoured neck heel makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless. The worn neck finish delivers an immediately broken-in feel and is tongue-oiled smooth and fast, while the early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim with some good shoulder to support the hand.
