Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This is an exceptionally light JM6. It weighs in at just 7lb 3.4oz. For anybody looking for a lightweight guitar that still has powerhouse tone, you’ll find it here.
The Lollar Imperials deliver buttery midrange, warm bottom and sweet top end. But in this open-coil configuration, they have just an extra dab of articulation thrown in the mix compared to their nickel-covered counterparts. The bottom end is tightened up a hair, the midrange becomes a touch more crisp and the highs a little more open. We find this to be a perfect pairing in the alder body of the JM6 Oltre. Cleans are sweet and enunciated. Overdriven tones sing, soar and roar with clarity.
This guitar also features individual coil splits. The volume knob is a push/pull for the neck split, and the tone is a push/pull for the bridge. You may notice that we mention this in other guitar descriptions as well, but we particularly like the sound of having one pickup split and the other in full humbucking mode. With individual coil splits you can do just that! The guitar does an amazing Strat sound-alike with the neck left humbucking and the bridge split. Just our 2 cents.
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up with the string action hovering right around 4/64” at the 12th fret all the way across. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The back of the neck is silky smooth, sanded down and treated with Tung Oil to feel immediately worn in.
