The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
A Strat on steroids. The trio of Lollar Firebird pickups features an array of switching options to give you six different pickup positions in humbucking mode and six more coil split. The upper 3-way switch gives you traditional control of the neck and bridge pickups while the lower 3-way controls the middle pickup with blend/solo/off positions. In the blend position, the middle pickup mixes with the signal of the upper switch, while the solo position gives you middle pickup alone.
This guitar does clean and spanky like nobody’s business. It falls right into Modern Pop and Neo-Soul inspired licks. The Roasted Maple neck delivers an incredibly forward and reactive touch. Turning on a little overdrive drops you in jazz fusion territory and beyond. Again, the guitar has an immediacy and directness that hits hard and punches in a mix.
The blended character of all three pickups has depth, complexity and clarity all at the same time. Whether keeping the pickups in humbucking mode or coil-splitting via the push/pull tone pot, this position is rich and expressive. Moving the upper toggle for neck/middle or bridge/middle blends allow you to channel that Strat-ish “out-of-phase” tone a step further. Back to simple, the neck position is a favorite position of ours with any Lollar Firebird pickup set. It is bold and tight on the bottom, crisp and chimey on top.
How Does It Play?
Fano’s “early ‘60s” C profile is a nice medium C with a healthy shoulder. It supports the hand nicely and is a nice middle ground between thin and beefy. You’ll immediately appreciate the level of dressing and polishing Fano does on their frets. The neck sets up perfectly and the action is low without buzz. The trem arm in the Gotoh 510T fits tight without play, and the trem itself can be set up to your liking to be fully floating or for just a nice Bigsby-like wobble.
