What Does Josh Think?
I think I found some chords on here that aren’t on any other guitar! But in all seriousness, the clarity of the Lollar El Rayo pickups had me reaching for voicings I’m not sure I’ve ever played on a humbucker guitar. And the best part? It’s still warm and lush through and through.
The neck position is deep down bottom, yet intensely chimey up top. The midrange has a clear, vocal quality to it. This pickup really paints with a broad EQ stroke that prevents chords from getting congested. It even works well with overdrives, not just for warm single note leads but even for larger multi-note lines anywhere on the neck.
The bridge pickup has bite, but without the midrange hump of a traditional humbucker. This lets it sound like everything from a tele pickup if played back close to the bridge, to a snarling mini humbucker if strummed closer to the fretboard. Either way it makes big, open rhythm chords come alive. Arpeggiations will ring sweet and true, supported from beneath and projecting confidently up top.
The middle position sparkles in a way that will make you forget you’re playing humbuckers at all! The attack is vibrant and immediate, with overtones that jump off the fretboard. This is also a really fun position for getting those behind-the-bridge sounds with the Mastery. Which is, by the way, one of the finest Jazzmaster-style vibratos you will find. The tuning on the guitar is incredibly stable.
Note that this guitar is very lightly distressed and has some finish checking that might not show up well on camera, most notably on the back of the body. This one is ready to wear with you the more you play it!
How Does It Play?
This guitar sets up superbly low without any fretbuzz. The string action measures 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without buzz. It starts out moderately slender, almost like an oval C, and rounds out nicely as you climb the neck. Healthy shoulders the whole way so the approach to the fretboard is always comfortable.
