What Does Josh Think?
Suhr Thornbuckers for the win! If you are wanting something in the realm of a vintage PAF but with a little added smoothness and sweeter top end, these are your ticket. With Alnico 5 magnets in the neck pickup, the neck position is rich and warm. But it manages to add a little upper midrange clarity that a lot of neck position humbuckers lack. Cleans are lush and pristine. Through gain it retains a nice chirp that gives you the flexibility to throw this position into a variety of uses.
The bridge pickup features Alnico 4 magnets and gives it a deliciously smooth bite. A little compressed (smooth) and vividly open in the EQ spectrum (bite). It skirts the nasal register of many bridge positions and instead has a full low mid content to support whatever you play up top. It can deliver hauntingly beautiful clean tones just as well as it can rip chunky power chords and searing leads.
The middle position gives you a wonderful blend of both pickups. It has plenty of clarity but doesn’t get clucky or out-of-phase sounding. It maintains depth and warmth while drawing out some extra sparkle in the mids and highs.
The Descendant Vibrato is a newer offering on the market, simultaneously bringing a few innovations and classic influences to the table. The strings literally descend into the tremolo plate, giving you a better break angle over the bridge to provide more downward pressure and stronger sustain. Everything is adjustable from firmness of vibrato to tightness of the trem arm swing. It is paired with a Descendant bridge which takes queues from both classic Jazzmaster and Mustang bridges with individually intonated barrel saddles.
How Does It Play?
The neck feels like the best of different Fender offerings from the ‘60s, halfway between an oval C and a mid-‘60s C. Very comfortable while being both fast and supportive. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E. The frets are dressed to perfection and there is no fret buzz. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets smooth and easy.
