What Do We Think?
For this JM6 “Black Beauty” we decided to combine some woods that we’ve been really enjoying. With a Black Limba/Korina neck, Ebony fretboard and Alder body this guitar shines with rich tonal character.
The Suhr Thornbucker Plus in the bridge position is PAF-inspired with slightly more output and an Alnico IV magnet. The result is a very balanced pickup with a nice sizzle on the top end when pushed. Paired with the Ebony fretboard and Korina neck, you get the bark of an SG with the depth of a Les Paul.
The Thornbucker in the neck is sweet and chirpy up high, deep and woody down below. The midrange is clear and articulate, slightly smoky. It’s rare to get a pickup that combines all those qualities.
Each pickup has a coil split, activated by push/pull volume knob for the neck and push/pull tone knob for the bridge. The bridge split keeps a strong midrange that makes it especially useful. And combining the neck split with the bridge in full humbucking mode gives you a best-of-both-worlds tone, opened up in the midrange but subtly compressed at the same time. Ask this guitar to do it, and it will likely rise to the occasion!
How Does It Play?
The profile is a moderate C inspired by an early ‘60s Fender shape, slim enough to be fast in the hand yet still supportive. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret across all frets; nice and low for easy playability. There is no fretbuzz. The contoured neck heel is a nice touch as well and really opens up the upper fret access.
