What Does Josh Think?
If only a guitar were a piano, or a piano a guitar.
Meet the JM6 loaded with Lambetones Ristretto pickups and topped off with ebony fingerboard. This guitar has big sustain, perfectly composed overtones, and an effortless union of warmth and note articulation. A flawless sounding board of wood and steel.
The neck position has the rich, uncongested character of a single coil but with a rounder attack and a firmer midrange. It is punchy and confident. The upper register has a controlled sparkle, while the bottom is bold and tight. And like a single coil, it can have a of bluesy bite as you increase the weight of your picking hand.
The bridge position has the steely power of a Tele, but without the top end spike. Think of it as having a very balanced EQ. Not the scoop of a single coil, nor the hump of a humbucker. There is just a touch of compression to smooth out every note. Clean, it is bouncy and responsive. With overdrive, it has a thumping low midrange and a singing upper register.
And the middle position may be my favorite of them all. I do not say that lightly. But on this guitar, the summation of both pickups makes a whole that is even greater than the parts. The guitar seems to resonate forever as the pickups capture the full breadth of the guitar’s natural overtones. It encourages a light attack because nothing more is necessary. Even the most complex of voicings retain transparency. Yet a single note just as easily fills a room by itself.
How Does It Play?
The early ‘60s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The finish is sanded naturally off the back of the neck to prevent any nitro stick as your hands get moving. The string action measures barely a smidge over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. There is no fret buzz.
