One “FanoBird” to rule the roost. Our very own Jim Smith purchased the first one of these that we had come through the door. Fano absolutely knocked it out of the park with the pickups, design and feel of the JM4. The tones are thick and delicious through the lows and mids but always matched with clarity and precision.Playing up the neck? Still warm and tight. The tone knob dials in the punch and “bite” and is musical throughout its entire sweep. The bass sounds killer through a PA and in-ears alike.

These are handbuilt in the USA with a resonant nitrocellulose lacquer finish on the body and neck. One builder from start to finish. We can’t speak highly enough of the relic’ing Fano is doing on their medium distress option. It really lends not just to the appearance of the instrument but also to the feel, with the finish broken in and worn smooth in all the places you’d expect after having an instrument on the road year after year.

How Does It Play?

These come in setup pretty nicely right out of the box from Fano, but we still do our due diligence of a thorough check and a nit-picky setup. Our resident bass player has this one dialed in. The worn finish on the back of the neck feels just right from the moment you first pick it up until you (finally) put it down. You won’t have any trouble feeling at home with this one for a four-hour gig.
