This custom JM4 features a lightly distressed Charcoal Frost Metallic finish with gorgeous finish checking and just enough nicks and hardware aging to take the edge off. Very natural if you’re not into the relic thing, and super classy. The Ebony fingerboard is dressed to the nines with white binding and block inlays, and the back of the neck is sanded smooth for one of the best feeling necks you’ve ever laid your hands on. With a full 34” scale length, the Lollar Thunderbird pickups are tight, responsive, and big on the low end. If you need a bass that is not “bright” but is musical and articulate, this one will get the job done. Double stops and chords retain excellent clarity; single notes are full-bodied and completely gratifying.

How Does It Play?

These come in set up great right out of the case from Fano, but we still do our due diligence of a thorough check and a nit-picky setup. We are pleased to report that this one sits an almost excessively low 2/32” across all four strings, without any buzz. The worn finish on the back of the neck feels just right from the moment you first pick it up until you (finally) put it down. You won’t have any trouble feeling at home with this one on a long gig.
