Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
The SP6 is an iconic design that Fano has really made their own. This guitar features a Fano T style bridge pickup, bridge plate without the cumbersome ashtray sides, and a Lollar P-90 in the neck.
These guitars have a really cool take on the Tele sound. They still pull off the traditional twang and snap, but have a little rounder approach. The Fano "T" Style pickup is very clear, and leans to the vintage side of the output spectrum but is in no way harsh. It sounds great with some overdrive, having a cutting midrange that is tailored very nicely.
The Lollar P-90 in the neck is a great choice for this guitar, offering some warm and spongey tones that compress very nicely when digging in. This position still retains a nice high end that keeps notes clear and defined while at the same time having a well-sculpted low end punch. The middle position delivers a best-of-both-worlds tone that combines the heat of the neck with the snap of the bridge.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full, but not too chunky. Less of a ’57, more of a ’59. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even a hair lower on the high E. All without buzz. The finish is sanded down smooth on the back of the neck to make sure it doesn’t give you any of that nitro stick.
