What Does Josh Think?
If you are looking for big warmth, beautiful articulation and sparkling top end all in one package, this is your guitar! The GF6 is constructed with a solid top and solid back/sides, giving the guitar a bit more response and sensitivity than some other notable semi-hollow designs. The TV Jones Classic and Classic Plus (bridge) combination captures the depth of the semi-hollow design without losing the nuance of the middle and upper registers.
The neck pickup is naturally warm, with an openness in the midrange that leaves room for nice big interval or octave lines through a clean amp, and delivers a bluesy bite when driven to breakup. The middle position is where you’ll fully capture the articulation and sparkle of the guitar. Arpeggiated chords ring out sweet and true. Even adjacent scale tones embrace their individual identities rather than clashing in a conflicting mush.
The bridge pickup delivers a perfect rhythm platform for clean tones and dirty alike. The full register of the guitar is captured with a pure, crisp attack. But even this position maintains an air of sweetness and fullness emanating from the semi-hollow body. And when you’re looking for rich, rounded lead tones, just roll back the tone knob a bit to round off the top end and emphasize that vast middle register.
The body is finished in a gorgeous Lake Placid Blue finish in light distress. Just enough relic that you don’t have to worry about giving it the first ding or scratch, but not enough to scream “distressed” for those who want to fly under the radar on the whole relic thing. The Bigsby allows you to add dimension to your longer sustained chords and really wraps the whole guitar up visually as well.
How Does It Play?
Fano’s “early ‘60s C” neck profile is a favorite of ours. It provides ample shoulder to support the hand, but does so with a moderately-slim depth of around .83” at the first fret. The neck sets up very nicely and plays beautifully all the way up and down. The string action at the 12th fret measures just 4/64” on the bass side and even less on the treble side.
