The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
Spec’d with a pair of Lollar Imperial Low Winds, this set-neck GF6 couldn’t make us happier! Before even plugging in, it is incredibly lively just strummed acoustically. That’s the magic of the solid maple carved top and solid mahogany back/sides. Unlike your mainstream semi-hollow offerings, there are no laminates present in the GF6. This guitar is sonically balanced, offering a brilliant high end and powerful but controlled low end response. It also features a 25.5” scale length for all you players who don’t get down with a shorter scale.
Plugged in, the bridge pickup has just the right upper midrange while offering a tasteful amount of sparkle. Single note lead lines have good body and a solid bark thanks to the Alnico 5 magnet in this pickup. An Alnico 2 magnet in the neck pickup makes the neck position particularly articulate with a natural, woody tonality. The semi-hollow construction gives staple blues licks a larger-than-life quality, while the same guitar can also take you from smooth, soaring leads to mellow finger-picked clean tones.
This one features a beautiful NOS Gold Top finish on the maple top and Brown Mahogany stain back and sides (it appears more red in the photos than in reality). If you catch the guitar under the light just right, you’ll see some of the exquisite natural finish checking that is a hallmark of Fano’s ultra-thin nitrocellulose finishes. This decked-out build features a set neck, body binding, neck binding and trapezoid fretboard inlays for one of the more sumptuous Fano productions to date.
How Does It Play?
Nothing to complain about here; the string action at the 12th fret measures just 4/64” on the low E string and even under that on the high E. The moderate C neck profile neither leans too far to “modern” nor towards fat and chunky. It sits comfortably in the middle with a good shoulder and nice taper as you climb the fretboard. We spec’d a 12” fretboard radius on this build to ensure successful string bends with low action from the first frets to the last.
