The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Do We Think?
The Bare Knuckle Abraxas pickups are superlatively rich and soulful, dishing out delicious midrange with thick, tight bottom and a tuned top end. Loaded in this alder body/maple top semi-hollow GF6, they sound absolutely massive. The Alnico IV magnets keep them on the “sweet” side, while 43 AWG wire is slightly overwound to boost the output slightly higher than vintage pickups.
The bridge pickup breaks up a clean channel very nicely, and also handles higher gain very well for something more vintage-voiced. The neck pickup compresses a bit for a big, punchy delivery. Lead lines are thick and smooth, but still cut in the mix. The middle has more of that “ES” chime and chirp on the top end.
In all three positions, we are thrilled with how the combination of pickups and maple top “tightens” up the bottom more than your typical semi-hollow guitar. Note that it’s a solid carved piece of maple rather than a laminate like most semi-hollow guitars. The same is true for the back/sides; all solid pieces of wood on the GF6.
How Does It Play?
Fano’s “early ‘60s C” neck profile is a perfect “medium” for most players. It provides ample shoulder to support the hand, but does so with a moderately-slim depth of around .83” at the first fret. The string action at the 12th fret measures just 4/64” on the bass side and even less on the treble side, without buzz. The finish on the back of the neck is sanded away for a smooth feel that lasts all night even as the hands start sweating.
