The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.
What Does Josh Think?
One of my favorite guitars in the shop right now! This guitar combines the air, body and sweetness of a 335 with the immediacy and responsiveness of a solid body guitar. One key ingredient is the body, constructed of a solid carved alder top joined to solid alder back & sides.
Another ingredient is the pair of Lollar El Rayo humbuckers, punchy and with hints of single-coil soul. It is really difficult to pick a favorite position. The neck pickup is robust and articulate. There is no “mushiness” here. Chords ring with clarity and single notes speak with authority.
The middle position is exceptionally snappy for a semi-hollow guitar. Strat-like in the quickness of the attack, but big and full-bodied. Funky rhythm parts are bold, crisp and defined. Arpeggiated chords maintain string-to-string composure even when voicing tight intervals on the lower strings.
The bridge pickup has a classic rock ‘n’ roll bark. It’s not particularly mid-heavy. In fact, picking or strumming near the bridge conjures ghosts of Teles past. But it has that dry, woody delivery that asks to be played loud and proud. Whether pushing an edge-of-breakup clean channel or ripping paint off the walls, this position remains strong and confident.
How Does It Play?
Fano’s “early ‘60s C” neck profile is a perfect medium for most players. It is fast, but has ample shoulder to support the hand and thwart any cramping. The string action at the 12th fret measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the bass side and under 4/64” on the treble side, without buzz.
