What Does Ivey Think?
If you're looking for a guitar that sets itself apart from the rest of your quiver, look no further. This Fano GF6 with maple fretboard, Lollar mini humbucker pickups and Descendant vibrato is a combination of specs not commonly found together (although it should be). It's a really special guitar that provides a multitude of great sounds.
I honestly expected this guitar to be really bright, but it surprisingly isn't. The bridge sounds are fat and crisp with a pronounced upper midrange but rounded off in just the right spot. The mini-humbucker sits right between a tele and a PAF. It has plenty of bite and isn't as muddy in the low end as a full size humbucker, all while having a nice dynamic range. There's plenty of snap and articulation that allows each note to be heard and a tight low end that perfectly supports it.
The neck sounds are some of the nicest I've heard. It's clear and precise in the upper mids but harmonically rich and blooming in the lower register, with a subtle scoop in between. It strikes the balance of having precision and warmth very well by not sacrificing mojo for clarity. The natural resonance of the guitar has a healthy low end, but the pickup controls it nicely and allows notes to be round but never overwhelming or muddy.
This guitar also includes a 3-ply black pickguard and mounting hardware, but we opted not to have it installed in order to show off the full beauty of the burst. This way there are no holes in the side of the body and you get to decide whether you like it better with pickguard or not!
How Does It Play?
The string action measures barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E. There is no fretbuzz. The early ‘60s-inspired C neck profile is fast, but with a nice amount of shoulder that supports the hand and thwarts fatigue. The finish is sanded naturally off the back of the neck to prevent any nitro stick as your hands get moving.
